Let us take you on a journey to a site where the next SkySails Power system may be installed: A dynamic kite glides gracefully through the clouds above your head while you observe the environment around you.

The flat topography in the system’s total operating and surrounding area is usually not used, and if, only for agriculture. There are no obstacles like large trees or tall buildings which obstruct your view – or slow down wind speed at launching height in the main wind direction.

You are standing near the ground station, in the fenced area as you watch the kite-based energy system flying in the 800-meter radius of its main operating area. A truly perfect site for airborne wind energy generation!

However, if this ideal case does not apply, certain obstacles, like trees, solar power plants, or industrial facilities, are acceptable within the operating area. In this case, specific approval may be required.

Site conditions for airborne wind

Solar Power Plats
Acceptable within the operating area. The plant operator must approve flight operations. The output of the solar plant is not reduced.

Industrial Facilities
Acceptable within the operating area if not highly frequented by workers. The respective company owner must approve flight operations.

Trees
Minimum distance of 150 m from the ground station. High trees might require larger distance.

Power Lines
Minimum distance of 300 m from the operating area,

Wind Turbines
Minimum distance of 1 km from operating area

Inhabited Housing
Must be outside the operating area and have minimum 50 m basic safety distance

Main Road
Public infrastructure (highways, railways, etc.) must be outside the operating area and have min. 50 m basic safety distance.

WIND PARK ARRANGEMENT:

The system can be arranged in wind park configurations, and multiple systems can operate with a distance of 400 meters between the ground stations. Depending on the site conditions, shorter distances may be possible.
