Successful system handover marks strategic entry into Asian market.
Hamburg, Germany / Lukang, Taiwan. August 21, 2025 – On July 1st, SkySails launched the first flight of its kite-based airborne wind energy system in Taiwan. The maiden flight marks the deployment of Asia’s first kite-based airborne wind energy system and a milestone for SkySails’ international expansion.
The system is located at Coastal Industrial Park test site and part of a multi-phase-cooperation between SkySails Power and Wistron Corporation’s subsidiary AiSails Power Inc. The companies are positioned to be forerunners in developing airborne wind energy in the Asian market, proving the technology’s benefits in providing renewable energy even in off-grid and decentralized locations with further projects in the pipeline.
“The Lukang site is the result of strong collaboration,” said Donald Hwang, Chairman of AiSails Power Inc. “It’s a starting point for scaling this innovative technology throughout Taiwan and the wider region.”
The Lukang deployment now serves as a showcase for airborne wind energy in Asia—empowering partners to prove the system’s functionality, build local expertise, and prepare for broader market development. A second system has already left SkySails’ production site in Seevetal, Germany, and is being shipped to Taiwan. Hamburg-based SkySails will continue to support on-site training and operations management.
“This first launch in Taiwan is an exciting major step—not only for our technology, but for the future of airborne wind in Asia,” said Stephan Wrage, CEO of SkySails Power. “With additional projects in the pipeline in Taiwan and in the Philippines, we are now entering a new phase of market development in Asia, supporting our broader go-to-market strategy and paving the way for international expansion.”
This project demonstrates the unique advantages of airborne wind energy in regions with limited access to conventional infrastructure. The compact, container-based system can be installed rapidly and flexibly, making it ideal for off-grid and remote applications. The high full-load hours also enable a hybrid system integration in existing solar parks. Its low material footprint of up to 90 percent fewer resources used makes it both resource-efficient and resilient to global supply chain disruptions.
SkySails Power is a pioneer and technology leader in the field of airborne wind energy. The Hamburg-based company develops and produces automated airborne power stations that generate renewable energy where it is needed – independent of fossil resources, off-grid, decentralized and material-saving. With its revolutionary technology, SkySails taps into the world’s greatest untapped potential for renewable energy: high-altitude wind.
