SkySails presents Kyo: First 450 kW airborne wind turbine can deliver clean power where other technologies fail

With Kyo, SkySails Power is launching the next generation of its airborne wind technology – decentralized and scalable for global use.

Hamburg, June 24, 2025 – In many regions of the world, a stable energy supply is still not a matter of course. Whether island states, industrial facilities or regions with unstable grids – the demand for decentralized, off-grid solutions is growing rapidly. SkySails Power is responding to this with a system that redefines access to clean electricity: Kyo, the new generation of airborne wind technology, is compact, robust and reliably delivers green energy – even where traditional renewable technologies reach their limits. With the official start of sales, SkySails marks a key milestone on the way to the industrial deployment of the technology. The first systems are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2028.

Kyo – the next leap in airborne wind energy

Based on the proven Venyo (PN-14) system, Kyo offers an output of up to 450 kW – with high mobility and rapid operational readiness. The expected annual electricity yield of up to 1,780 MWh at 9 m/s is equivalent to supplying around 600 households. The actual energy production depends on site-specific conditions. The technology works without complex foundations, reduces the use of materials and can be put into operation within a few days.

Thanks to its modular design and software-based control, Kyo is particularly suitable for challenging environments: Off-grid sites, hurricane and typhoon areas, industrial applications or hybrid solutions with existing wind and solar installations.

Solution to the key challenges of the energy transition

Demand for renewable electricity is rising rapidly, while grid expansion is stalling and available land is scarce. Renewable energies are essential for our energy supply but established solutions are reaching their limits in some areas. The energy transition needs new approaches – scalable, area-efficient and independent of existing infrastructures. This is where SkySails comes in: High-altitude winds are more constant and stronger and, depending on the location, enable up to 5,000 full-load hours per year. In addition, airborne wind systems can be used in regions where other renewables are hardly feasible due to extreme weather events.

The low use of materials, considerate land use and the flexible installation make the technology particularly attractive for project planners who want to develop new locations. As a complementary technology in the energy mix, airborne wind energy also has an ideal balancing effect in hybrid systems, e.g. in combination with solar energy and battery storage, thus supporting energy suppliers who focus on security of supply and grid-friendly integration. Politics and location promotion benefit from new technological value chains, regional production and an industrial policy instrument to strengthen energy sovereignty. Airborne wind energy opens up new potential for an affordable, resilient energy supply.

“Our technology makes clean electricity possible everywhere”

“With Kyo, we are providing regions around the world with a tool to shape their energy future in a self-determined and resilient way,” says Stephan Wrage, CEO and founder of SkySails Power. “Our airborne wind technology is flexible, efficient and can be used decentrally. We are ready to actively shape the energy system of the future.”

Scalable, protected, proven

Kyo is based on a technology platform whose performance has been proven by the world’s first externally validated power curve for airborne wind energy. Protection through an extensive patent portfolio and ongoing further development underline the long-term scaling potential – both in terms of power classes (1+ MW) and global application possibilities. Interested partners and customers can already plan their projects with Kyo and secure early access to innovative, clean airborne wind energy.

Revolutionary Airborne Wind Energy System in Operation in the Republic of Mauritius

A revolutionary new technology for green power supply has taken off on the island of Mauritius: A kite of 120 m² flies over the sugar cane fields of the island in the Indian Ocean to harness the wind in several hundred meters of altitude.

Research project SkyPower100 successfully completed

SkyPower100 is the world’s most comprehensive project to demonstrate an automated airborne wind energy system. Since 2019, an airborne wind energy system with kites of up to 120 m² has been in operation within the project in Klixbuell/Schleswig-Holstein. This makes Klixbuell the site with by far the longest operating experience of airborne wind energy systems worldwide.
